EU Agency: Ukrainian women fleeing the war often experience violence in the European Union

The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights has reported that many Ukrainian women displaced by the war are facing violence and discrimination in EU countries, urging better protection measures.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has released a report highlighting the plight of approximately 2.5 million women and girls who fled Ukraine following Russia's invasion four years ago. Despite being granted temporary protection in various member states, these individuals frequently confront significant barriers and insecurity. FRA director Sirpa Rautio emphasized the urgency for EU member states to ensure that these women receive adequate protection, support, and justice for the traumas they have endured, as well as the opportunity to rebuild their lives in safety.

The report reveals alarming statistics, stating that one in four Ukrainian women has experienced either physical or sexual violence since the onset of the war, indicating a disproportionately higher risk compared to the general population. Additionally, the FRA notes that 62% of these women have encountered violence in one of the 27 EU member countries where they seek refuge, which raises serious concerns about their safety and well-being in host countries. The report also notes that 9% of them experienced violence while fleeing to the EU, highlighting the severe risks faced during their escape from warfare.

In light of these findings, the FRA is calling for immediate action from EU member states to ensure the safety and support of these vulnerable individuals. Overcoming the barriers faced by Ukrainian women in securing protection and justice is essential not only for their recovery but also for fostering a more inclusive and secure environment within the EU for all displaced persons. The agency's findings shed light on the urgent need for comprehensive policies that address these challenges, demonstrating the ongoing impact of the war on women's safety and rights in Europe.
