Águas de Teresina is fined R$ 2.6 million for sewage leak in the South Zone

The city of Teresina has fined Águas de Teresina R$ 2.6 million due to a sewage leak affecting residents in the Saci neighborhood.

The Municipal Agency for Regulation of Public Services of Teresina (Arsete) announced a hefty fine of over R$ 2.6 million against Águas de Teresina for a sewage leak in the Saci neighborhood, located in the southern part of the city. This fine comes after numerous notifications issued to the company, requiring compliance with municipal regulations regarding public health and safety. The situation involves untreated sewage containing human waste leaking onto a public street, raising serious health concerns for the local residents.

The infractions originated from a leak that had persisted for an extended period, with residents expressing their grievances to Arsete as early as October. The agency highlighted that despite the multiple warnings, Águas de Teresina failed to address and resolve the issue satisfactorily. This negligence not only impacts the immediate environment and public health but also reflects on the company's accountability and reliability in providing essential public services to the city.

The imposed fine represents a significant 6.1% of the company's average monthly revenue from the previous six months, illustrating the regulatory framework's intent to enforce compliance among service providers. As of now, g1 is awaiting further comments from Águas de Teresina regarding the penalties and their response to the ongoing sewage crisis.
