Resumption of flights after controlling a fire at Lagos Airport

Flights have resumed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos after a fire was contained in the old terminal building.

The Lagos Airport Police Command confirmed that operations at Murtala Muhammed International Airport returned to normal after firefighters were able to fully control a fire that erupted in the old terminal building. The fire, which occurred on Monday, disrupted flight schedules and caused confusion among travelers, leading to the diversion of some international flights due to the affected control tower activities. Smoke could be seen billowing from parts of the building as emergency response teams worked diligently for hours to extinguish the flames.

According to police spokesman Officer Muhammed Adebayo, the fire originated in a section of the old terminal before being brought under control through coordinated efforts from all responding agencies. During the incident, 12 workers were reported to be trapped near the control tower but were subsequently rescued and received immediate medical attention, with no severe injuries or fatalities reported. This incident, however, has raised concerns among travelers and airport officials regarding safety and emergency preparedness.

Following the incident, Officer Adebayo confirmed that all temporarily suspended flights had fully resumed. All operations have been relocated to the new terminal while the affected building will remain closed for further assessments and repairs. The airport's ability to recover quickly from the fire indicates the effectiveness of its emergency response protocols, although it also highlights the importance of ongoing safety evaluations at major airports to prevent future incidents.
