After another delay: Bahn replaces project manager for Stuttgart 21

The Deutsche Bahn is replacing the project manager of the Stuttgart 21 railway project amid significant delays and ongoing issues with the digitalization of the network.

The Deutsche Bahn announced the retirement of Olaf Drescher, the current project manager for the Stuttgart 21 project, amid persistent issues that have plagued the completion of this major railway initiative. Following a series of setbacks, including a recent postponement of the project's commissioning, Klaus Müller, a seasoned railway manager and former digitalization head, has been appointed to take over the role. The changes reflect the project's ongoing struggle to meet its deadlines, with the latest target for partial operations pushed back to an uncertain future.

The Stuttgart 21 project has faced numerous complications, leading to numerous leadership changes, now totaling six since its inception. The latest delay was announced by the new CEO of Deutsche Bahn, Evelyn Palla, who canceled the previously scheduled partial opening set for late 2026. This decision was influenced by continuing digitalization problems within the railway hub, which are crucial to the functionality of the new underground station. As the project continues to falter, stakeholders are left questioning the feasibility of achieving future timelines.

Currently, a 15-member corporate audit team is investigating the internal issues at Deutsche Bahn and the role of contractors, such as Hitachi, in the project's challenges. This inquiry aims to provide insights into the missteps that have resulted in the significant delays and leadership turmoil. As of now, the new opening date remains ambiguous, leaving both the project and its stakeholders in a state of uncertainty regarding its future operations.
