South Africa: R760 Million Infrastructure Investment to Ease Water Woes

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced a R760 million infrastructure investment in Johannesburg aimed at resolving persistent water issues.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has unveiled a substantial R760 million investment aimed at addressing long-standing water supply challenges in Johannesburg. Speaking during the State of the Province Address, Lesufi outlined a phased approach to upgrades that includes the construction of a new ground reservoir and a water tower in Brixton, which is set to be operational shortly. He emphasized the urgency of these upgrades, noting that they are integral to restoring access to clean water for the affected communities.

The investment not only focuses on immediate improvements, such as an emergency pumping station scheduled to launch next week but also emphasizes the long-term solution involving the construction of a 5km pipeline. This pipeline is expected to be completed by year's end and will significantly enhance water distribution in areas including Hammanskraal, Bronkhorspruit, Kokosi, Fochville, and Kwa-Thema. Lesufi highlighted that the national government is playing a key role in ensuring a positive return on this investment for local communities.

Premier Lesufi pointed out that the issue facing these regions is not the availability of water itself but the infrastructure needed to deliver it efficiently. He expressed confidence that with these upgrades, the dignity of residents will be restored, thus addressing both a critical public service need and improving the quality of life for many in Gauteng. This investment is seen as a critical step in the broader strategy to ensure sustainable water supply across the province, which has been plagued by infrastructure challenges for years.
