The Civil Police of São Paulo executed a significant operation against a group involved in the 'false present' internet scam, targeting eleven suspects. This scam, notorious in Cuiabá, involved tricking victims into believing they were receiving gifts during special occasions, only to be coerced into paying fake delivery fees through card machines. The police noted that the amount charged often exceeded the amount initially disclosed, either through equipment manipulation or misleading the victims.
In the coordinated police action, authorities executed preventive arrest warrants, search and seizure warrants, as well as blocking orders on the financial assets of the suspects, indicating the severe scale of the fraud. The total losses reported by victims from Cuiabá exceeded R$ 160,000, revealing the impact this scam had on the local community. This operation underscores an increasing response from law enforcement to online scams targeting unsuspecting individuals.
The investigation was led by the Specialized Police Department for Fraud and Other Swindles in Cuiabá, which highlights the collaborative efforts between different police departments across state lines to tackle increasingly prevalent online scams. This coordinated strategy aims not only to bring the perpetrators to justice but also to raise awareness among potential victims about the tactics used in these cons, thereby reducing the risk of future fraud incidents.
