The killing of a Syrian security element and militia leaders in clashes in the countryside of Latakia

A Syrian security element was killed and militia leaders were neutralized during clashes in the countryside of Latakia.

Reports from Syrian security sources indicate that a member of the internal security forces was killed and key leaders of the militia known as 'Saraya Al-Jawad', linked to remnants of the ousted regime, were neutralized following armed clashes near the city of Jabla in Latakia province. The Syrian Ministry of Interior confirmed to Al Jazeera that a unit from the internal security forces engaged in confrontations with elements from the militia, successfully neutralizing a prominent leader in 'Saraya Al-Jawad' along with two of its field commanders. The local reporter stated that a security campaign targeted several villages in the Jabla area of Latakia province, resulting in the arrest of several militia members associated with the remnants of the ousted regime.

This operation is part of ongoing efforts aimed at pursuing armed factions linked to the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad, which the current authorities accuse of destabilizing security and order within the country. 'Saraya Al-Jawad' was established in August 2025 and comprises remnants of officers and personnel from the ousted regime in the coastal region, following orders from Suhail al-Hassan, the commander of the previous regime's special forces. This militia has been involved in previous operations, including assassinations and bombings, marking it as a significant threat to the current government’s stability.

The clashes underscore the ongoing volatility and insecurity troubling Syria, especially in regions like Latakia, where remnants of the former regime remain active. The Syrian government's attempts to eradicate such groups highlight the intense ongoing struggle for power and control within the country, as they seek to consolidate their authority over areas that have witnessed significant conflict and unrest in the past. Such activities may have deeper implications for peace and stability in Syria, raising concerns about the potential resurgence of violence from these militia groups as they attempt to reassert their influence.
