VIDEO: security images capture the start of the fire in the sculpture 'O Boi', in Maceió

Security footage shows the moment the sculpture 'O Boi' catches fire in Maceió, leading to partial destruction of the artwork.

Security images released by the police captured the moment when the sculpture 'O Boi', created by master craftsman João das Alagoas, began to burn on Avenida da Paz in the Jaraguá neighborhood of Maceió. The incident took place in early February but gained widespread attention on February 18 when images of the damaged sculpture went viral on social media. The fire caused significant damage to the piece, which is a notable art installation in the area.

The security footage revealed a suspect who appeared to be responsible for the arson. In the video, the individual can be seen carrying an object resembling a fuel container and passing near the artwork moments before the fire starts. This evidence has prompted local authorities to continue their investigation into the incident, although the suspect has not yet been identified.

In response to the incident, the Government of Alagoas announced on February 23 that it has begun restoration procedures for the damaged sculpture. The restoration process is expected to last around ten days and will focus on reconstructing the internal structure of the artwork, ensuring it receives reinforcement to prevent future damage. This incident raises concerns about the safety of public art installations and the need for better protections against vandalism and arson.
