Hlib Takadzhi, who fled Bucha during the onset of the Russian invasion in 2022, recalls the harrowing experience of leaving his home under distressing circumstances. On February 24, 2022, Takadzhi was awakened by his mother in a panic, urging them to flee their home as explosions and gunfire surrounded them. He vividly explains how he and his family hastily packed their belongings and left, witnessing the devastating impact of the invasion firsthand while also worrying about his father, who was in the besieged city of Mariupol at the time.

Despite the trauma and chaos, Takadzhi managed to maintain a sense of calm for his mother and younger brother, positioning himself as a source of support during the crisis. He reflects on his emotional state, describing a numbness in the face of extreme stress and citing conversations with a psychiatrist that highlighted the varying ways individuals respond to traumatic situations. As he and his family made the difficult decision to wait for his father, he became a bridge of hope amidst despair, showcasing resilience during an incredibly challenging period of his life.

Now studying in England, Takadzhi is determined to return to Ukraine to help his country rebuild and recover from the conflict.
