Start of the alcohol lock obligation. What changes and how it works

Italy's implementation of the alcohol lock law begins, requiring installation of the device in cars of offenders caught driving under the influence.

Italy has officially entered the operational phase of the 'alcolock', a device that must be installed in cars belonging to individuals who have been convicted of driving with a blood alcohol content exceeding legal limits. The law, which has been in effect for several months, is now being put into practice, with authorized installers of the alcohol lock recently published on the Portal of the Driver by the Ministry of the Interior. This marks a significant step towards stricter enforcement of drunk driving laws.

The list of authorized installers was released through a circular letter detailing the specifics of the devices and their installation requirements. As of now, two models of alcohol lock devices designed by manufacturers Autobynet and Zaldy are available for installation. Motorists convicted of driving under the influence will need to comply with the law and get these devices fitted to their cars as part of their penalty period.

Mandatory installation of the alcohol lock device will take effect when individuals are stopped by law enforcement at checkpoints and found to have exceeded the alcohol limit. This initiative reflects Italy's commitment to road safety and aims to reduce alcohol-related traffic incidents by ensuring that offenders cannot drive their vehicles without passing a breathalyzer test. The implications of this law are significant, potentially leading to a decrease in drunk driving offenses and enhancing public safety on the roads.
