China Opposes Unilateral US Tariff Imposition... Will Hold High-Level Trade Talks

China's Ministry of Commerce urges the US to abandon its newly imposed tariffs and expresses willingness for high-level trade discussions.

Following the US's imposition of a 10% tariff on global imports, China has openly urged the US to reverse this decision. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce remarked that it is monitoring the situation closely and will adjust its response according to subsequent developments. The tariff implementation aligns with a recent ruling by the US Supreme Court that deemed previous tariff measures unlawful, which prompted President Trump to invoke trade law to apply the 10% tariffs. Despite initially suggesting a hike to 15%, the tariffs were set at 10% with indications that they may be raised in the future.

The Chinese Ministry maintained its long-standing opposition to unilateral tariff actions and called on the US to refrain from further impositions. It emphasized that a collaborative approach between China and the US is beneficial for both parties, while conflict would ultimately harm both economies. Furthermore, the Ministry announced plans for a sixth high-level trade meeting, which is expected to take place ahead of President Trump's visit to China at the end of the month. This meeting aims to establish agendas and potential agreements, fostering better trade relations between the two nations.

The forthcoming high-level discussions have raised hopes for improved economic ties, with China expressing a desire to uphold the consensus reached during the previous engagements between the two leaders. The expected talks are viewed as pivotal for stabilizing China-US economic relations, which have faced numerous challenges amid rising tensions over trade policies. Both nations are keen to prevent further escalation and ensure sustainable development in their economic and trade interactions.
