The Supervisory Board of the Agricultural Fund Will Address the Recovery of Subsidies from Agrofert
The Supervisory Board of the Agricultural Fund is set to discuss the enforcement of subsidies owed by Agrofert, amid controversies surrounding conflicts of interest involving its former owner, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.
Last week, Dubský summoned the board following a statement released by the Ministry of Agriculture in December, indicating that the Agricultural Fund should initiate the process of recovering subsidies amounting to over seven billion Czech crowns that were distributed despite a conflict of interest concerning Agrofert's then-owner, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Since the Ministry's statement, no action has been taken by the fund to recover these payments, raising concerns regarding accountability and governance.
Former Agriculture Minister Marek Výborný noted that while the fund had conducted a review involving two companies linked to Agrofert, this was merely a preliminary step and did not result in any formal proceedings to reclaim the subsidies. Both Výborný and Dubský are questioning why further actions were not pursued, reflecting larger issues related to transparency and the management of state resources in situations rife with potential conflict.
The Ministry's December statement also underscored ongoing uncertainties about whether the conflict of interest rules apply to entitlements for subsidies, illustrating the complex legal issues at play. As the board prepares to address these concerns, the implications for agricultural policy and governance in the Czech Republic remain significant, especially given the political backdrop involving Prime Minister Babiš, who remains a contentious figure in Czech politics over his business dealings and political conduct.
