Man is wounded with bottle neck for refusing to give money to beggar in tourist area of Fortaleza
A man was attacked and wounded in Fortaleza after he refused to give money to a beggar, leading to a violent encounter that resulted in hospitalization.
In the early hours of Monday, April 23, a man was assaulted with the neck of a broken bottle after declining to give money to a beggar on Rua dos Tabajaras, a well-known tourist area in Praia de Iracema, Fortaleza. The attacker, identified as Francisco Jonatas de Oliveira Camelo, confronted the victim around 4 a.m. when the request for money was made. Following the refusal, Camelo broke a glass bottle and inflicted injuries on the victim, including a serious wound to the neck.
Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, and the wounded man was transported to the hospital for treatment. As of now, there have been no updates on his health condition, which raises concerns about the severity of the injuries suffered during the assault. Meanwhile, law enforcement apprehended Camelo at the scene, and he was charged with attempted homicide due to the violent nature of the attack.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, the judge determined that Camelo would remain in preventive detention following a custody hearing, underscoring the seriousness of the offense. The case highlights ongoing issues surrounding safety and violence in popular urban areas, particularly as they relate to interactions between locals and beggars in tourist hotspots.
