Access to the Rooftop of the Jätkäsaari Parking Facility is Immediately Restricted - Four Fatalities as Background

Access to the rooftop of the Jätkäsaari parking facility in Helsinki will be restricted following four fatalities since last summer.

In response to a concerning trend of fatalities, access to the top level of the Jätkäsaari parking facility in Helsinki is being restricted. The CEO of Jätkäsaaren Pysäköinti Oy, Mikko Syrjänen, confirmed that the upper level will be closed entirely to both pedestrians and vehicles. This decision comes after four individuals fell to their deaths from the rooftop since last summer, prompting immediate action to ensure public safety.

The top level will be cordoned off with construction fencing and prohibits entry from both the external terrace stairs and internal access points. While this closure serves as a temporary measure, there are plans to explore more permanent safety enhancements. Syrjänen noted that discussions are underway regarding further development of these plans, with an aim to implement them by spring, should the decision be made to improve safety through construction.

The parking company is responding to local community concerns about safety and is taking swift action to address these issues with a temporary solution. Residents in the Jätkäsaari area have been vocal about the need for improved safety measures, and this immediate closure is part of the parking operator's commitment to enhancing the security of the facility for its users and the surrounding community.
