Inaugural trans-Tasman yacht race postponed

The inaugural Trans-Tasman Yacht Race has been postponed due to the withdrawal of nine out of 11 entries, rendering the event unviable.

The inaugural Trans-Tasman Yacht Race, scheduled to start on February 27 from Sydney to Auckland, has been postponed after the majority of competitors withdrew, leaving only two entries. The race, covering 1,270 nautical miles, was to be the final leg of the Southern Cross Series, which includes prestigious events such as the Cabbage Tree Island Race and the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

The withdrawal of nine entries was deemed significant enough by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) to announce the postponement. They cited that the event was "not operationally viable" with such reduced competition. This decision reflects concerns over safety and the overall appeal and competitiveness of the event, which is designed to showcase the best in offshore sailing.

Looking forward, the CYCA has indicated that no new date will be set until a strategic review of the race is conducted. This review will likely assess various aspects, including competitiveness, organizational structure, and participant interest, to ensure the future success of the Trans-Tasman Yacht Race, making it a staple in the sailing calendar for years to come.
