Toddler with no symptoms 'turned to stone' after catching Covid
A toddler named Lettie was diagnosed with a rare condition linked to a Covid infection that caused severe physical symptoms despite having no prior indicators of illness.
Lettie, a young toddler from Fleetwood in Lancashire, experienced severe health complications after contracting asymptomatic Covid-19. Her parents noticed something was wrong when she initially refused breakfast, but things escalated quickly; she vomited, became pale, and, shortly after, collapsed in her father's arms. It was a shocking turn of events, as her parents described her as being completely fine just moments earlier.
Upon being rushed to the hospital, medical professionals initially suspected Lettie had experienced a febrile seizure. However, her deteriorating condition, which included purple and mottled skin, led her parents to demand further investigation. Ultimately, doctors discovered that the asymptomatic Covid she had contracted triggered acute necrotizing encephalopathy, a rare and dangerous condition affecting her brain, putting her life at significant risk with a mere 50/50 chance of survival.
The diagnosis has prompted her parents, Jack and Zuzanna, to advocate for greater awareness regarding the potentially severe effects of Covid-19, even in cases where infections are asymptomatic. Lettie's condition, which they describe as turning her body 'to stone', highlights the importance of monitoring children for symptoms and understanding the broader impacts of Covid, as well as the need for further research into long-term effects of the virus on young children.
