Military Service: From Today the New ESOS – What Changes and What is the New Model

Greece introduces a new military service framework aimed at enhancing the experience for conscripts starting this February.

The Greek Ministry of National Defense is launching a significant reform to military service with the start of the A' ESOS 2026 conscription phase scheduled for February 24-27. This reform is part of the 'Agenda 2030' initiative, which seeks to transform military service from a mere obligation into a meaningful experience. The changes aim to revamp various aspects of military life, including training, compensation, and job specialties, thereby ensuring that the experience is more beneficial and relevant for those enlisted.

Previously, the basic training for new draftees in the Greek Army lasted around 5 to 6 weeks, dependent on the branch and training center. Under the new model, the initial phase of training, known as SBVEN (Soldier Basic Training New Draftees), will last approximately 4 weeks, followed by a supplementary training period before assignment to their respective units. Additionally, the overall training program will be expanded to include more practical exercises and shooting, along with the incorporation of drone training, which was previously absent.

The reform emphasizes the importance of providing certified skills that have market value to the soldiers, aiming to enhance their career prospects after military service. With these adjustments, the Greek military hopes to attract a more engaged and skilled workforce, ultimately improving both the military experience and the overall effectiveness of Greece's defense capabilities.
