Nigeria: Lagos Consumes More Fuel Than 11 Nigerian States Combined - Report

A recent report reveals that Lagos state consumes more petrol than 11 other Nigerian states combined, highlighting its significant role in Nigeria's fuel usage.

A report by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) indicates that Lagos state stands out as Nigeria's leading fuel consumer, utilizing 257.7 million litres of petrol in December 2025. This figure represents approximately 13.04 percent of the total national fuel distribution of 1.97 billion litres during that month. The analysis, presented to the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), underscores the city's immense consumption relative to other parts of the country.

In comparison, a collective of 11 Nigerian states, which includes Jigawa, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Yobe, Ekiti, Taraba, Gombe, Kogi, Borno, Zamfara, and Katsina, consumed a total of 257.3 million litres, equating to about 13.02 percent of national distribution. This marginal difference of 408,567 litres between Lagos and these states starkly illustrates the concentration of fuel consumption in Lagos, exacerbating concerns regarding resource allocation and infrastructure demands on the city.

The implications of this report are significant, indicating that as Nigeria's commercial hub, Lagos may require enhanced infrastructural support to manage its fuel needs effectively. Moreover, this trend can inform policymakers about the necessity of strategic planning in fuel distribution and energy resource management to ensure balanced development across the country, preventing disparities between states.
