Japan government contacts Lutnick, requesting that alternative tariffs be no less favorable than before

The Japanese government is urging the U.S. to maintain equal tariff treatment following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling against Trump's reciprocal tariffs.

The Japanese government has reached out to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, requesting that the new alternative tariffs imposed by the Trump administration should not result in worse treatment than what was agreed upon in previously established tariff agreements. On the 24th, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry announced that Minister Ryosei Akazawa had discussed these concerns during a phone call, emphasizing the need for both governments to work closely together on the recently announced 'strategic investment initiative' project. The request came in the light of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that deemed Trump's reciprocal tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act unlawful, prompting the President to declare a 10% global tariff with plans to increase it to 15%.
