Haruna Kondo becomes a one-day fire chief: 'Preparation is important to protect lives' Fire Prevention Movement

Comedian Haruna Kondo served as a one-day fire chief in a fire prevention training event, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in fire safety.

Ahead of the nationwide fire prevention movement in Japan, which runs from March 1 to March 7, the Tokyo Fire Department conducted a fire safety drill at Toyota Arena in Koto, Tokyo. Comedian Haruna Kondo, known for her act as one half of the duo Harisenbon, took on the honorary role of 'one-day fire chief' at the event. She encouraged everyone to prioritize fire safety with the slogan 'Are you doing it? Fire Prevention!' stressing that preparation is key to protecting lives.

During the training, participants simulated a scenario in which a fire broke out due to an earthquake occurring while an event was being held in the arena. Staff members and local firefighters practiced getting visitors to evacuate to safety and using fire extinguishers effectively. Kondo directed the fire team as they performed a synchronized water spraying exercise, showcasing the importance of teamwork and readiness in an emergency situation.

This year, Tokyo has already faced the death of 25 individuals due to fires, an increase of 2 from the same period last year. Hirozumi Ichikawa, the fire chief, urged citizens to be cautious, particularly during these dry conditions, highlighting the continued risk posed by fire hazards. Therefore, the emphasis on fire prevention is timely and crucial as the annual movement approaches, aiming to raise awareness and encourage safety measures among the public.
