Uday Bhanu Chib, the Youth Congress president, has been arrested by Delhi police for his involvement in a shirtless protest during the AI Summit.
Uday Bhanu Chib, the president of the Youth Congress, was arrested by the Delhi police early Tuesday morning after being interrogated for approximately 20 hours in relation to a shirtless protest that took place during the AI Summit. According to reports, he was taken into custody around 4:30 AM and is currently being held at the Tilak Marg police station, where security has been increased with the presence of CRPF and Delhi police personnel. As of now, the Delhi police have not issued any official statement regarding the matter.
Prior to his arrest, Chib was held for questioning regarding the protest, which has seen a total of seven individuals arrested thus far. The Congress party has criticized the police's actions, claiming that they are motivated by political vendetta. Shashikant Senthil, a Congress MP, expressed solidarity with Chib by stating on X that despite the police's actions, the fight for the youth of the country will continue, reflecting the party's commitment to supporting its leaders and activists.
This incident highlights the increasing tensions between the political parties in India, especially regarding issues of dissent and freedom of expression. The allegations of political targeting by the Delhi police against members of Congress raise important questions about the state of democracy and civil liberties in the country at a time when such protests are becoming more frequent in various forms. The response from the Congress party may also intensify the ongoing political discourse leading up to future elections.
