Daiso Launches 100 Won Sanitary Pads After President's Critique of High Prices

Daiso is set to release sanitary pads priced at 100 won each following President Lee Jae-myung's criticism of their high costs, signaling a broader shift towards reducing prices in the market.

Daiso, in collaboration with Clean Country, has announced the launch of a new line of sanitary pads priced at 1,000 won for a pack of ten, making each pad cost just 100 won. This initiative follows the remarks made by President Lee Jae-myung during a recent government meeting, where he highlighted the unreasonably high prices of domestic sanitary products and suggested the production of low-cost alternatives. Daiso’s move to introduce ultra-low-cost sanitary pads is part of a wave of responses within the manufacturing and retail industries to address consumer concerns about rising prices amidst persistent inflation.

The new 100 won per pad sanitary pads are completely produced domestically and will be available in Daiso stores nationwide and via the Daiso online shop starting this May. Daiso's existing range includes sanitary pads sold at higher prices, with a standard pack of ten currently retailing at 2,000 won (200 won per pad) and another option at 1,000 won (250 won per pad). The new offering represents a price reduction of up to 60% compared to existing products, and reflects Daiso’s commitment to maintaining affordability in essential goods, as expressed by a company representative who emphasized their goal of easing the burden on customers facing rising living costs.

In tandem with Daiso's strategy, the overall sanitary pad market is experiencing a push towards lower-priced alternatives, fueled by President Lee’s directives. Leading companies in the sanitary products sector, such as Yuhan-Kimberly and LG Unicharm, have announced plans to expand their offerings of mid-range to low-cost sanitary products. Retailers also engage in competitive pricing, highlighted by Coupang's new offering of sanitary pads priced at 99 won, which sold out within two days after launch. Convenience stores are also participating in promotional campaigns, further intensifying competition in the market for affordable sanitary products.
