Priscila Schettini requests Niels Olsen to restore her position in the Assembly after fulfilling her sentence with the TCE
Priscila Schettini has requested the restoration of her legislative position after completing her sentence related to political violence against women.
After completing a sentence from the Electoral Contentious Tribunal (TCE) regarding gender-based political violence, Priscila Schettini has formally requested the President of the National Assembly, Niels Olsen, to enable her seat as a legislator for the Citizen Revolution (RC). Having been suspended from her political rights for a three-year period, Schettini claims to have fulfilled the terms of her sanction as of February 10th, following her certification document submitted on February 23, 2026.
The initial decision made by the TCE in May 2025 led to a significant penalty against Schettini, which included not only a suspension of her political rights but also a monetary fine of $22,500. This penalty arose from allegations made by the former Attorney General of the State and current ambassador of Ecuador in Argentina, Diana Salazar, regarding instances of political violence against women. Such severe implications have highlighted persistent gender-related issues within Ecuador's political landscape.
However, on October 8, 2025, it was communicated that the terms of her sentence were modified or 'modulated,' resulting in a reduction of the suspension of her political rights. This procedural adjustment has given rise to Schettini's current appeal for reinstatement, which reflects ongoing discussions concerning political accountability and the complexities of gender dynamics in the Ecuadorian political system. The outcome of her request could have broader implications for gender representation and the handling of political violence cases in the nation's governance.
