Calgary police investigate 2 extortion-related shootings over the weekend

Calgary police are investigating two shootings believed to be connected to ongoing extortion cases targeting the South Asian community in the city.

Calgary police, along with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), are examining two shootings that occurred over the weekend which may be linked to a series of extortion incidents in the city. The first shooting took place on February 22, where unknown individuals shot into a residence on Saddleridge Drive N.E. The assailants fled in a white sedan following the incident.

The following night, February 23, a second shooting occurred at a residence in Savanna Park N.E., where shots were fired by an unknown suspect who fled the scene on foot. Fortunately, no one was harmed in either shooting; however, police have established that these incidents are likely connected to a broader pattern of extortion attempts, specifically targeting the South Asian community in Calgary.

Deputy Chief Asif Rashid confirmed that one victim involved in the latest shooting had previously reported extortion attempts to law enforcement. The continued investigation reflects a growing concern among the police regarding the safety and security of the community and underscores the need for vigilance against such criminal activities. Law enforcement is working to uncover the motives behind these violent incidents and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
