Alberta's Minister of Primary Health Care, Adriana LaGrange, addressed concerns surrounding a standing measles warning that was issued for Parkland County, located west of Edmonton, after 17 individuals tested positive for the virus. The decision to issue this broad alert came as health officials were unable to determine the specifics of when and where the outbreaks occurred, prompting a precautionary measure to ensure public safety in the area.

Local officials, however, expressed frustration over communication lapses related to the advisory. Mayor Rod Shaigec of Parkland County highlighted that neither he nor the county council were informed about the alert prior to its release, leading to confusion and mistrust among residents. Additionally, the City of Spruce Grove, situated within the county, revealed through social media that they, too, had not received any details regarding the measles warning, urging residents to contact Alberta's health agency for more information.

In light of these issues, LaGrange reported that she has reached out to the chief medical officer of health to discuss the measles cases and emphasized that her department is making efforts to improve communication with local authorities, particularly with Spruce Grove. This situation underscores the importance of timely and transparent communication from health officials, especially in public health emergencies, to ensure that local leaders and community members remain informed and can take the necessary precautions to safeguard their health.
