Argentina creates center to strengthen border migration control
Argentina has established a new center to enhance the control and management of migration at its borders amid ongoing migration challenges.
On Monday, Argentina's National Security Minister, Alejandra Monteoliva, announced the launch of the Center for the Analysis of Migration and Border Information (CAIMF). The primary objective of this new center is to organize the migration system and reinforce border control, reflecting the Argentine government's focus on managing its borders more effectively. The CAIMF is designed to integrate information and coordinate alerts between various government bodies, including the National Security Secretariat, Migration services, and Federal Security Forces, creating a permanent, interoperable control scheme that relies on data analysis for improved decision-making.
Minister Monteoliva emphasized that individuals coming to Argentina with the intent to work legally and adhere to the law are welcome, while those seeking to enter the country illegally or with prior criminal records will be barred from entry. This statement highlights Argentina's approach to immigration, aiming to strike a balance between welcoming lawful migrants and enforcing strict controls against illegal immigration.
In early February, Monteoliva confirmed advancements toward establishing a Migration Security Agency, a project initially announced in November 2025. This agency will possess policing powers and intelligence capabilities, reinforcing the government's commitment to managing migration more effectively and securely. The establishment of both the CAIMF and the forthcoming agency reflects Argentina's proactive stance in addressing migration issues and enhancing border security in the region.
