Part of street gives way after erosion in gallery of Teresina, residents report

Residents in the South Zone of Teresina are warning that a section of Rua Celso Veras is collapsing due to erosion in an open sewer system.

Residents on Rua Celso Veras in the South Zone of Teresina have expressed serious concerns as a section of the street has started to collapse due to erosion caused by issues in an open sewer gallery. Over the past months, this erosion has worsened, leading to major inconveniences and posing risks for pedestrians and vehicles alike. Reports indicate that the situation has been exacerbated by municipal interventions involving backhoes, which have altered the landscape of the area significantly.

According to Hilquias Pessoa, a resident for about seven years, the deterioration accelerated following the removal of earth along the gallery, leading to a steep drop-off that has endangered both the road shoulder and part of the street itself. He described the gallery as having transformed into a ravine, causing the street to increasingly give way. Residents are demanding urgent attention to the issue, as the risks seem to multiply with every rainfall and passing vehicle.

In response to these complaints, the Urban Development Secretary (SDU Sul) has acknowledged the problem and confirmed that a technical visit to the area has been conducted. Additionally, they noted that the site is on the schedule for necessary repairs. However, residents are understandably anxious given the ongoing dangers, and there are calls for more immediate action to rectify the situation before it worsens further.
