Fine Furniture Case: Prosecutor requests trial for judge Nubia Vera for the crime of concussion

The Prosecutor's Office in Ecuador is seeking to bring Judge Nubia Vera to trial for concussions in the Fine Furniture corruption case.

The General Prosecutor's Office of Ecuador has requested an anticorruption judge to call Judge Nubia Vera of the Family, Childhood, and Adolescence Unit of Pichincha to trial for the crime of concussions. The preparatory hearing for the trial resumed on the morning of February 23, 2026, at the Northern Judicial Complex in Quito. In the afternoon, the Prosecutor's Office reported that, based on over 55 pieces of evidence presented during the hearing, it sought to bring Judge Vera to trial as a suspected direct perpetrator of the crime.

Additionally, the Prosecutor's Office requested the court to maintain the prohibition on Vera leaving the country, along with periodic appearances of the defendant. They also sought to instate a ban on the alienation of assets and the retention of accounts for an amount of $10,520. In connection with the same case, on August 5, 2025, Judge Esteban Coronel of the Pichincha Court of Justice had ordered Vera to make periodic appearances, indicating the serious nature of the accusations against her.

This case, revealing corruption within the judiciary in Ecuador, underscores the ongoing issue of integrity within legal institutions in the country. The actions of the Prosecutor's Office not only aim to bring accountability to individuals in positions of power but also reflect a broader effort to combat corruption and restore public trust in the judicial system.
