When the skate blade bends again and straightens… A gold medal conveyed to my mother by my sick sister

A talented speed skater, despite facing challenges and a late start, achieves success and carries the dreams of his family.

Seong-jun, a 17-year-old speed skating national team candidate, demonstrates resilience and talent as he trains continuously without complaint, despite wearing the same skates for four years and borrowing a jersey from a senior. His coach, who has trained him since he was six, praises him as exceptionally gifted, noting that he has never ranked below first in his age group since starting his athletic career. At a recent practice, Seong-jun completed five laps without showing fatigue, embodying dedication and commitment to his sport.

Starting skating at the age of six, there were worries about his balance, leading his mother to encourage him to strengthen his ankles at the local rink. Initially, she believed he would lose interest quickly, given his past with swimming and piano. However, witnessing his impressive skating abilities during practice changed her perspective, prompting her to support his skate career wholeheartedly. His remarkable performance during a key practice solidified her belief in his talent, inspiring her to ensure he continues training in speed skating.

Although starting his competitive career later than his peers, Seong-jun quickly rose to prominence, ranking first nationally in the 500m event within a year. By sixth grade, he achieved an extraordinary feat, winning gold medals in all five categories of the national elementary speed skating championship. Despite facing injuries last year that limited his training, he remains the only candidate from his grade to be considered for the national team, showcasing his resilience and potential for future success in the sport.
