The EU Council agrees on new sanctions against Russia

The EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels has reached an agreement on sanctions against eight Russian judicial and prison officials involved in repression against civil society in Russia.

On Monday, the European Union's (EU) Foreign Affairs Council convened in Brussels and achieved a consensus to impose sanctions on eight additional Russian officials from the judicial system and prison services. These officials are accused of being involved in the repression of local civil society in Russia. This action highlights the EU's ongoing commitment to hold accountable those contributing to human rights abuses and oppression in the country.

Latvia was represented at this meeting by the parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Artjoms Uršuļskis, who emphasized the critical need to bolster international support for Ukraine's energy infrastructure amidst Russia's efforts to undermine it, which have been contributing to a humanitarian crisis in the nation. Uršuļskis advocated for the continuation of the EU's strategy of 'peace through strength,' calling for increased financial and military support for Ukraine while maintaining pressure on Russia.

The additional sanctions, targeting individuals involved in the Russian human rights regime, are seen as a necessary step in the EU's broader strategy to enhance its own security while addressing the challenges posed by Russian aggression. The discussions reflect a united stance among EU member states on the importance of supporting Ukraine and countering Russian actions that threaten regional stability.
