It was supposed to be a routine procedure. A regular visit to the hospital ended in death
A routine shoulder surgery at a hospital in Radom, Poland, turned tragic when a 45-year-old man passed away due to complications arising from inadequate anesthesia administration.
A 45-year-old man named Maciej visited Mazowiecki Szpital Specjalistyczny in Radom for a routine shoulder reset following an injury. The procedure was intended to be standard, but it quickly took a dire turn when the emergency department doctor administered general anesthesia without the oversight of an anesthesiologist. Approximately 20 minutes post-anesthesia, Maciej ceased breathing. While resuscitation efforts commenced and a tracheostomy was performed, he was able to regain breath but remained unconscious thereafter.
Following resuscitation, Maciej was transferred to the intensive care unit, where the hospital failed to inform his family about his critical condition. His sister only learned of the situation during a visit. Subsequent tests revealed cerebral edema and severe damage from oxygen deprivation. The medical team recommended compassionate care in a hospice, where he ultimately passed away two days later.
The family expressed their devastation and confusion over the lack of clear communication and accountability from the hospital regarding what had transpired. They felt dismissed, struggling with the harsh reality of organizing Maciej's funeral while grappling with the unanswered questions surrounding his death and the circumstances leading to it.
