Estonia's Foreign Minister: 'Putin is playing with Trump and all of the West'

The Estonian Foreign Minister asserts that Putin is manipulating peace negotiations to influence the West.

In an interview with EL PAÍS, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna discussed the recent report from Estonia's foreign intelligence service, which warns that Russia is using peace negotiations as a tactic to manipulate the West. Tsahkna emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin is deceiving not only the West but also former U.S. President Donald Trump by giving the impression that he seeks peace, while the reality may be quite different.

Tsahkna's return from Ukraine has left him shaken by the harsh conditions faced by the Ukrainian population during one of the coldest winters of the ongoing conflict. He described the urgency for real action from Europe, particularly regarding their relations with countries like Cuba. He argues that the European Union needs to reevaluate its stance and consider firm measures, especially as they deal with global manipulation from Russia.

The dialogue reflects a growing concern among Baltic nations about Russian strategies in Europe, particularly with how these tactics may influence political leaders in the West. Estonia, being on NATO’s eastern flank, feels the repercussions of Russian aggression, and Tsahkna's remarks highlight a call for unity and a robust response from the EU to counteract such manipulation.
