Mexico: At least 25 members of the National Guard killed in CJNG attacks after the death of El Mencho

A deadly wave of violence in Mexico has claimed the lives of at least 25 members of the National Guard and other officials following the death of a cartel leader.

In a violent aftermath of the death of Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho, at the hands of security forces, at least 25 members of Mexico's National Guard were killed along with a police officer and a judicial employee. This marked a significant escalation in violence attributed to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) which seems to have intensified its attacks in the state of Jalisco in response to the military operations targeting its leadership, according to Security Minister Omar García Harfuch.

The violence has been particularly severe in the Jalisco state, and amid this turmoil, the security forces managed to kill around 30 cartel members as part of their counter-offensive efforts. Additionally, a woman was reported killed in this wave of violence, highlighting the tragic collateral damage that often accompanies such gang conflicts. The lethality of these clashes illustrates the ongoing struggle in Mexico to contain cartel violence even in the face of military intervention.

In response to the escalating violence, Mexico's Defense Minister Ricardo Treviño announced the deployment of 2,500 troops to the western region of the country, creating a reinforced military presence aimed at deterring the CJNG's operations. Prior to this deployment, approximately 7,000 soldiers were already stationed in Jalisco. This military strategy reflects a broader national effort to combat the influence of one of Mexico's most prominent drug cartels, ultimately seeking to restore order and public safety amid ongoing insecurity.
