Enel is not interested in selling São Paulo's energy distributor, says CEO
Enel's CEO, Flavio Cattaneo, declared that the company has no intention of selling its energy distribution concession in São Paulo, despite challenges it faces that could lead to the concession’s expiry.
Flavio Cattaneo, the CEO of Enel, stated in a press conference that the company is not considering selling its energy distribution concession in São Paulo, amid ongoing challenges with the regulatory agency. These challenges have raised speculations about a potential sale of the asset before the risk of losing the concession materializes. Cattaneo pushed back against these rumors, emphasizing that the company's stance is resolute with no current plans for divestment.
The company is presently navigating through legal complexities as it faces a process that could lead to the expiry of its concession due to regulatory concerns. Cattaneo expressed confidence in Enel's legal standing, asserting that they are prepared to defend their position against the allegations from the regulatory body, the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). The CEO also stated that the company does not fear this process, indicating a strong belief in their compliance and operational legitimacy.
Enel has strongly criticized Aneel’s consideration of the December power outage in its assessment of the concession's compliance, arguing that it should not factor in that event's impact. Cattaneo cited legal opinion supporting Enel’s view that such an inclusion would be against the law and unconstitutional. This ongoing situation presents significant implications for Enel's operational future in Brazil and sparks debate on regulatory practices within the sector.
