Gas for the People is available for 4.5 million families starting this Monday (23); see how to apply

Starting Monday, 4.5 million Brazilian families can apply for the Gas for the People program, which offers vouchers for gas refills.

The Caixa Econômica Federal has launched the third phase of the Gas for the People program, beginning on Monday, which allows approximately 4.5 million Brazilian families to access vouchers for the refilling of four or six gas cylinders each year. Eligible families must have a registered responsible person who can go to an authorized gas sales company and present a Bolsa Família chip card, a Caixa debit card, or a CPF with a validation code sent to their mobile phone.

This new program replaces the previous Auxílio Gás, which distributed direct cash transfers to beneficiaries. The government investment in the Gas for the People program amounts to R$ 449 million, indicating a significant commitment to support low-income families. The initiative aims to provide relief from the rising costs of gas, recognizing the financial burden it places on households across Brazil.

The rollout of this program began in November of last year, initially available in ten capitals targeting one million families. With each subsequent phase, including a successful expansion to 17 cities in January, the program now aims to reach all capitals. The final phase of the program is scheduled for launch in the following month, demonstrating the government's ongoing efforts to ensure that essential commodities like gas remain accessible to vulnerable populations in Brazil.
