Security forces in Rio de Janeiro reported the arrest of 731 individuals during this year's Carnival, a figure shared during a press conference by government authorities. Notably, nearly 30% of those arrested were already released due to custody hearings, as mentioned by Victor dos Santos, the Secretary of Public Security. These figures indicate a focused effort on maintaining public safety during one of the most celebrated festivals in Brazil, which witnessed a positive outcome compared to previous years.
This year's statistics depicted a 43.5% decrease in incidents involving tourists compared to the 2025 Carnival, which officials have described as the best in terms of public safety in recent years. Felipe Curi, the Secretary of the Civil Police, emphasized these improvements, alongside a 32.8% reduction in thefts and robberies, particularly targeting mobile phones and pedestrians. These statistics reflect an overall enhancement in public security measures during major public events in Rio de Janeiro.
Additionally, the fire department conducted a total of 1,864 maritime rescues during the Carnival period, with more than 500 occurring at the 2nd Grouping in the Barra and Recreio areas. The statistics provided showed a 10% increase in the number of adults arrested, an 18% rise in the number of minors apprehended, and a significant 211% increase in the recovery of stolen cell phones, indicating aggressive law enforcement efforts during the festivities.
