Moraes extends deadline for sending images of the mega-operation in Alemão and Penha; RJ has another 20 days

Minister Alexandre de Moraes extends the deadline for the Rio de Janeiro government to submit images from a police operation that resulted in significant casualties.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) has decided to extend by 20 days the deadline for the Rio de Janeiro government to submit all images related to the recent mega-operation conducted in the Penha and Alemão complexes, which resulted in the deaths of 122 individuals, including five police officers. This decision was made on Thursday, the 19th, emphasizing the need for accountability and thorough investigation regarding the operation's outcomes.

The submitted materials will be examined as part of the ADPF 635, also known as the 'ADPF das Favelas,' which sets protocols for police operations in communities across the state. The Supreme Court has stated that the government must provide not only footage captured by security agents' camera systems during the operation but also documentation related to the autopsies of the victims. This investigation aims to ensure that the proper procedures were followed during what turned out to be a highly controversial operation.

Additionally, the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) is similarly required to submit its records within the same timeframe. This broadened inquiry suggests an ongoing concern regarding the conduct of police operations in favelas and strengthens the accountability mechanisms that guide law enforcement actions in these communities. The decision underscores the judiciary's role in overseeing police practices to protect the rights of citizens, particularly in vulnerable neighborhoods.
