The whole municipality of Bergen affected by extensive data breach
The municipality of Bergen in Norway has suffered a major data breach, exposing personal information of thousands of employees and politicians.
Bergen municipality has experienced a significant data breach linked to Telia, resulting in the theft and dissemination of personal information, including names, phone numbers, and SMS logs of approximately 2000 to 2500 employees and politicians. The finance commissioner Eirik B. Tenfjord has confirmed that nearly all municipal phone lines have been impacted. This breach has serious implications for the privacy and security of the affected individuals, as their communication records over an extended period have been compromised.
Hackers reportedly accessed Telia's billing information for the municipality, which revealed user activity from 2021 up to April 2025. Although the specific content of messages and phone conversations has not been released, the information leaked includes contacts that users have reached out to and the time frames of these communications. This puts the individuals at risk of targeted harassment and other forms of unwanted attention.
The municipal authorities have indicated uncertainty regarding whether date and time stamps of calls and messages are also available, raising further concerns about potential privacy violations. As investigations continue, officials are likely to implement additional security measures and analyze the full extent of the data breach to protect against future incidents and ensure the safety of confidential information determined to be compromised.
