Lithuanian residents are increasingly turning to Latvia for alternative biofuel sources to stabilize heating costs amid rising prices and harsh winter conditions.
With the onset of biting cold and soaring heating bills, Lithuanian energy producers are sourcing alternative biofuels from Latvia. Energy Vice Minister Edita Gudauskienė emphasized that these alternative sources reduce the risk of price volatility and provide more stable conditions for both producers and consumers. As Lithuania grapples with rapid increases in biofuel prices due to extreme cold, this strategic shift is seen as critical for maintaining affordable heating for residents.
Mantas Burokas, head of VKJ, noted that the decision to tap into the Latvian market was driven by the urgent need to address the skyrocketing biofuel prices in Lithuania. Currently, the situation remains tense, and the necessity for alternative sources has become evident. The company continues purchasing supplies from Latvia, having already secured four additional shipments, with plans for more after the trading session on February 24. This initiative aims to stabilize the heating situation while keeping prices competitive for Lithuanian consumers.
