Ukraine signals new talks with Russia on Feb. 26β27, Kremlin yet to confirm
Ukraine is planning new U.S.-mediated peace talks with Russia on February 26-27, although the Kremlin has not yet confirmed the schedule.
The head of Ukraine's President's Office, Kyrylo Budanov, announced on February 23 that a new round of peace talks with Russia could take place on February 26-27, following a recent negotiation meeting in Geneva that ended without significant progress. Budanov emphasized that preparations for the talks are ongoing, stating that all parties involved, including a host, would need to come to an agreement for the discussions to proceed.
Despite Ukraine's announcement, the Kremlin has yet to confirm the timing of the talks. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated on February 20 that no agreement had been cemented for the new negotiation round, and he would keep reporters updated once any arrangements were in place. This indicates ongoing uncertainty regarding the diplomatic process, which many hope will lead to a resolution to the conflict.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has been vocal in urging a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that only Putin holds the necessary authority to make lasting decisions regarding their ongoing conflict. The prospect of further dialogue reflects Ukraine's willingness to pursue peace, yet the lack of commitment from Russia raises questions about the feasibility of any upcoming discussions.
