JR invites the former Daft Punk member Thomas Bangalter to transform the Pont Neuf into a "sound cave"
Thomas Bangalter, former member of Daft Punk, is set to create a musical environment for street artist JR's project at the Pont Neuf in Paris, transforming it into a "sound cave" in June.
The renowned street artist JR has announced an ambitious project to transform the historic Pont Neuf in Paris into a "sound cave" during June 2024, with the participation of Thomas Bangalter, who is known for his work with the electronic music duo Daft Punk. The project aims to pay homage to the iconic wrapping of the bridge by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, which took place 40 years ago, thus celebrating both the legacy of these artists and the rich cultural history of the location.
Beginning on June 6th and running through the 28th, the Pont Neuf will be adorned with sharp-edged rocks, covering a vast area of 120 meters long and 20 meters wide. This installation will dramatically alter the visual landscape of the bridge, allowing only the structureβs arches to remain recognizable. JR has invited Bangalter to conceptualize the sound dimension of this installation, suggesting that the interplay of light, sound, and form will culminate in a multi-sensory experience for visitors.
The event not only showcases the intersection of visual and auditory art but also emphasizes the importance of temporary art installations in public spaces, fostering community engagement and cultural dialogue. The transformation of the Pont Neuf into a "cave" is symbolic, inviting attendees to explore new perceptions of this historic monument while reflecting on the broader implications of art as an experience that transcends traditional boundaries.
