Crash of Tejas aircraft of the Air Force? HAL clarifies on the incident

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited clarified that the Tejas aircraft did not crash, following reports of an incident involving the Indian Air Force's light combat aircraft.

On Sunday, reports circulated claiming that a Tejas aircraft of the Indian Air Force had crashed, marking the third incident involving this aircraft model. However, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) issued a statement on Monday clarifying that the Tejas jet had not crashed, emphasizing that the aircraft’s safety record is considered one of the best among modern fighter jets worldwide. The statement was significant, particularly given that the Indian Air Force has intensified technical inspections of its Tejas fleet since the loss of a third aircraft earlier in the month, with the latest incident involving damage during landing, though the pilot was safe.

HAL further stated that the incident under scrutiny was a minor technical event that occurred on the ground, which was being analyzed in collaboration with the Air Force following standardized procedures. The need for clarification arises amidst heightened scrutiny of the Tejas fleet, especially after two earlier accidents involving the same aircraft model in March and November of the previous year. These incidents have raised concerns and prompted the Indian Air Force to reinforce its inspection protocols concerning the safety and operational readiness of the Tejas aircraft.

Attention is now shifting to the long-pending Mk1A program, with the Indian Air Force scheduled to evaluate the Tejas Mk1A in April, which will be crucial for the future deployment and operational capabilities of the aircraft. The emphasis on this program highlights the Air Force's strategic planning to enhance its fleet capabilities and reinforce its defense readiness, particularly in light of recent incidents that have put a spotlight on the reliability of the Tejas aircraft series.
