Zelensky Revealed: Trump Prevented Important Actions Regarding 'Patriot'
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that former President Donald Trump's administration hindered Ukraine's ability to manufacture its own Patriot missile systems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised concerns regarding the challenges faced by Ukraine in enhancing its air defense capabilities, particularly citing issues with the procurement and manufacturing of 'Patriot' missile systems. He disclosed that the United States has not yet granted licenses that would allow Ukraine to produce these crucial defense systems domestically or to manufacture missiles for systems already in their possession. Zelensky expressed his confusion over the reasons behind the U.S. stance, especially given Ukraine's pressing need for such advanced defense technology, given the ongoing hostility from Russia.
Furthermore, Zelensky referenced a report from Financial Times which highlighted a shortage of 'Patriot' interceptors during extensive Russian attacks aimed at Ukraineβs energy infrastructure in January. He emphasized that the missile launch equipment was left empty, rendering them unable to respond effectively to ballistic missiles that targeted power stations. This situation underscores the dire need for Ukraine to bolster its air defense mechanisms while facing continuous aerial threats from Russia.
In addition to addressing air defense, Zelensky called upon the U.S. Congress to approve a long-term security guarantee for Ukraine, spanning 30 years. He stressed the importance of such assurances, particularly considering the changing nature of presidential administrations in the U.S., noting that while presidents may change, institutional support remains constant. This request highlights the ongoing dependency of Ukraine on U.S. support and the importance of international partnerships in the face of geopolitical challenges.
