UN: The reconstruction of Ukraine may cost over 5,600 billion

The reconstruction of Ukraine after four years of war is estimated to cost nearly $588 billion according to a new report.

Following four years of devastating conflict, Ukraine faces a monumental challenge in rebuilding its war-torn infrastructure and communities. A recent assessment conducted by Ukraine’s government, the World Bank, the European Commission, and the United Nations has revealed that the cost of reconstruction over the next decade could reach approximately $588 billion. This figure translates to over 5,600 billion Norwegian kroner, which is nearly three times Ukraine's projected gross domestic product for 2025.

To provide further context, the reconstruction costs are equivalent to about 2.6 times Norway's national budget for 2026, or nearly the entire fortune of Elon Musk, one of the world's wealthiest individuals. The report highlights that since the full-scale invasion by Russia on February 24, four years ago, direct damages to Ukraine have exceeded $195 billion according to the UN Development Programme (UNDP), which participated in the preparation of the report. This highlights the overwhelming financial and social toll that the ongoing conflict has inflicted upon the nation.

Moreover, the destruction has left around 14 percent of homes in Ukraine damaged or destroyed, affecting more than 3 million households. The implications of this widespread devastation are profound, as the emotional and economic recovery for affected families and communities will take many years, necessitating not only financial assistance but also a robust plan for sustainable rebuilding efforts. The international community's support and commitment will be crucial in helping Ukraine navigate this challenging path to recovery.
