LIVE: The Riigikogu has summoned Brussels officials regarding Rail Baltic

The Riigikogu is holding a special committee meeting to discuss the Rail Baltic project, prompted by rising costs and unresolved risks associated with the railway's development.

On Monday at 1:15 PM, the Estonian Riigikogu will hold a special session focusing on the Rail Baltic railway project's timeline and costs, which has been a significant infrastructure initiative intended to connect the Baltic states with Poland. This meeting comes in response to recent findings from the European Court of Auditors, which noted that the total cost of the railway project has escalated to €23.8 billion. The Riigikogu's budget control committee aims to delve into these developments during a public session.

Chairman Urmas Reinsalu has highlighted that both the Estonian National Audit Office and the European Court of Auditors have raised concerns about the rising costs and financing timeline changes associated with the Rail Baltic project. He stressed that clear and transparent information regarding Estonia's financial commitments, funding mechanisms, and potential risks should be communicated to ensure the sustainability of the project, particularly if one or more Baltic states fail to meet their commitments on schedule.

Additionally, the public hearing will feature notable participants, including Annemie Turtelboom from the European Court of Auditors, auditor Guido Fara, and representatives from Latvia's Saeima Rail Baltic inquiry committee. Their involvement underlines the importance of collaborative oversight and accountability as the project progresses, addressing concerns raised by various financial auditing entities about the project's management and future viability.
