We Will Watch Babiš, Promised Motorists. But the Head of ANO Dominates, Šťastný Defends Himself

Czech Finance Minister Alena Schillerová's announcement of the reintroduction of electronic sales records highlights the dominant position of the ANO movement in the governing coalition, contradicting the Motorists' promise to keep Babiš in check.

The announcement by Czech Finance Minister Alena Schillerová, a member of the ANO party, regarding the reinstatement of electronic sales records (EET) has brought to light the significant influence ANO holds within the current coalition government formed with the SPD and Motorists. This situation has drawn criticism towards the Motorists, especially since their primary campaign promise revolved around monitoring the actions of Prime Minister Babiš. Despite their assurances, it became evident that they failed to act decisively against the EET initiative or the high deficit in the state budget currently being debated.

Motorist representative Boris Šťastný responded to inquiries about the apparent lack of dissent regarding ANO's plans by asserting that there is no need for public outcry against their own governing partners. He contended that his party, Motorists, is effectively negotiating and has succeeded in convincing ANO to refer back certain policies. This stance, however, has led critics to question the sincerity of their promises to serve as a balance to ANO's power, as their response to serious issues appears muted or conciliatory.

Originally, the Motorists campaigned under the guise of being a counterbalance to the ANO party, pledging to halt the policies of the current administration led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala while vowing to keep a close watch on Babiš. This recent turn of events raises concerns among voters about the efficacy of their role in government, suggesting that the Motorists may be compromising on their principles for political survival or influence within the coalition, thus undermining their initial pledge to challenge Babiš's government effectively.
