Shamanism entertainment, referring to fallen police officer as 'stabbing'... Criticism mounts for 'defaming the deceased's honor'
A South Korean entertainment program has faced backlash for its inappropriate reference to a fallen police officer, prompting demands for an apology and episode removal from police organizations.
The entertainment show 'War of Destiny 49' featured a segment where a fallen police officer's death was trivialized by the use of the term 'stabbing.' This term was used during a mission that involved guessing the cause of death of the officer who died in the line of duty while apprehending a suspect. The segment sparked outrage among police organizations, notably the National Police Association, which publicly condemned the behavior of the show's cast and crew for treating the officer's sacrifice as a comedic element. They expressed their deep anger and sadness, stating that such actions disrespected the deceased and undermined the honor of all police officers.
The National Police Association reiterated that the sacrifice of officers who die in the line of duty represents profound personal and national loss, and that trivializing this loss is a reprehensible act that further victimizes the relatives of the deceased. They highlighted that the public comments made by well-known celebrities and broadcasters illustrated a gross inadequacy in their conduct as public figures, displaying a lack of respect towards the sacrifices made by the officers. As a result of these events, the police association is demanding not only a public apology from the individuals involved but also the removal of the controversial episode from all platforms.
The controversy heightened as the police union released a statement calling for immediate action against those responsible, including disciplinary measures from the Korea Communications Standards Commission. The backlash emphasizes the need for media to engage with sensitive topics—particularly those involving death and sacrifice—with the requisite respect and sensitivity, ensuring that such tragedies are not exploited for entertainment purposes.
