Following their victory at the men's ice hockey tournament at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, the USA hockey team paid tribute to their late teammate Johnny Gaudreau. Gaudreau, who played in the NHL for 11 seasons and represented the USA in five World Championships, tragically lost his life due to a drunk driving incident in the summer of 2024, leaving behind two young children and a significant impact on his team and sport.

Before his untimely death, Gaudreau had expressed a desire to represent the USA at the World Championships in the previous year and was also seen as a strong candidate for the Olympic team. His legacy continues to resonate within the team, and each tournament since his passing has seen his jersey prominently displayed in the locker room. During the finals celebrations, key players like Auston Matthews, Matthew Tkachuk, and Zach Werenski brought his jersey onto the ice in a heartfelt gesture marking his memory.

The presence of Gaudreau's children on the ice during the team’s photo opportunity further emphasized his lasting influence on the team.
