Maido Saar has been awarded the Anna Raudkats Lifetime Achievement Prize during a dance event in Tartu commemorating the 140th anniversary of Anna Raudkats' birth.
On February 21, a dance event was held at the Estonian National Museum in Tartu to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Anna Raudkats' birth. During this event, the Estonian Song and Dance Foundation awarded the Anna Raudkats Lifetime Achievement Prize to Maido Saar, a notable figure in the field of folk dance leadership in Estonia. This recognition is meant to honor individuals who have significantly contributed to the development of Estonian folk dance over their lifetime.
Anna Raudkats, born on February 23, 1886, in Tartumaa, was a pioneer in Estonian gymnastics and folk dance pedagogy and was instrumental in compiling Estonian folk dances. She is renowned for creating essential terminology for folk dancing and is celebrated for the hymn-like piece, "Tuljaku," which has become synonymous with dance festivals in Estonia. The prize established in her name signifies a legacy of honoring those who uphold and advance the traditions of Estonian dance culture.
The Anna Raudkats Foundation was established in 1992 by the Estonian Song and Dance Foundation to preserve the memory of this influential dance educator and to promote folklore and folk dance activities in Estonia. The lifetime achievement prize is awarded exclusively to individuals over the age of 60, recognizing their long-term and fruitful contributions to the Estonian folk dance scene, with only one award given once to each laureate, making it a prestigious accolade.
