"ChatGPT Used News Without Permission"... Three Major Broadcasters File First Lawsuit Against OpenAI

Three major South Korean broadcasters are suing OpenAI for allegedly using their news content without permission to train ChatGPT.

In South Korea, the issue of unauthorized use of news articles by artificial intelligence systems has escalated, leading to a lawsuit filed by three major broadcasters against OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. The broadcasters—KBS, MBC, and SBS—announced that they have filed a lawsuit at Seoul Central District Court, claiming that OpenAI unlawfully utilized their news content for the commercial operation of its generative AI without obtaining necessary licenses. This marks the first instance of domestic news agencies taking legal action against a global tech giant over copyright infringement. Previously, the broadcasters had filed a similar lawsuit against Naver for the unauthorized use of news content by AI, which is still under consideration in court.
